Music and Copyright

Over at my averyjparker.com site I’ve detailed some of the excursions in Audio software I’ve had over the long Labor Day weekend. One thing that I ran across in that is a site which lists a large number of hymns along with their copyright status (most all of these listed are older hymns in the public domain.) The lyrics for the hymns are given in most cases as well as a midi file. The score is also viewable via Sibelius’ Scorch plugin.

In recording hymns and thinking about putting them online (and ages back actually putting them online via mp3.com) the issue of copyright is an important one. I’ve spent many hours trying to document that I’m working from a public domain copy of a work. It may be unnecessary to do the legwork like that all the time, but…. Anyway - the site above doesn’t abdicate you of the responsibility of doing further copyright research, but it could give you a start in the right direction.

If you’re interested in Hymns, there’s also cyberhymnal.org which hosts a large number of midi file- hymns as well as scores and history for many. They also have a fairly good non-english section as well.
