Chimes CD
I have a cd for sale. I just finalized things last night at lulu.com… I’ve called it Chimes Volume 1 mainly because I expect there will be a volume two…. I’ve taken many old traditional (public domain) hymns and done a fairly simple play of them. There’s nothing fancy. About 8 years ago our Minister noticed the speakers up on the roof of the Church and asked about them, for some time in the evenings there had been an old reel to reel that had played a “chime” around 6PM in the evenings. The reel-to-reel had stopped working at some point and we were given a tape deck to try to revive the tradition. The only problem was content. Most of what we could find was too busy and too orchestrated to really serve as a “chime” I mean, JUST bells is pretty much what we had in mind, so I recorded about 8 or so songs using a vibraphone sound on the Kawai CA640.
At the time, I was recording using Powertracks Pro and it seems as though I added a bit of reverb and even put them up on mp3.com If I recall correctly someone in Illinois actually bought a cd (there may have been someone in New Jersey also…) It was short (15 minutes) but served our purposes perfectly. It’s been a while since we’ve used them. I think we used them off and on for a couple years (It seems as though we didn’t bother to test when we hooked up the new amplifier and we had figured we had a loose wire as they didn’t seem to work at some point…).
Anyway, recently I had run across the old recordings and thought, immediately, about lulu.com where you can “self-publish”, just upload and they handle printing/shipping/etc. So, I listened to the tracks and upon realizing it was 15 minutes, I thought…. there’s no way I can release that and charge even their minimum (5.50) for that. So, I added material. The CD is 28 tracks and I think I timed it at around 50 minutes. It’s gone through several listen throughs. A few of the original tracks have been replaced to fix various problems with the audio quality on the first pass.
Anyway… here’s my current description of it…
“A collection of 28 traditonal hymns done as “chimes”. Originally I did this collection for our Church to use with the outdoor speakers to simulate “chimes”. The songs included are: Abide With Me, Amazing Grace, At the Cross, Blest Be the Tie that Binds, Break Thou the Bread of Life, Close to Thee, Footsteps of Jesus, God Be With You, Have Thine Own Way, He Hideth My Soul, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus, I’ll Live for Him, I Must Tell Jesus, I Need Thee Every Hour, In the Garden, Jesus Lover of My Soul, Jesus Loves Me, Jesus Loves the Little Children, Jesus Saves, Leaning On the Everlasting Arms, More About Jesus, My Jesus I Love Thee, Nearer My God to Thee, Pass Me Not, Praise Him Praise Him, Rock of Ages, There is a Fountain, Trust and Obey. Amazing Grace is available as an MP3 preview.”
Maybe this time, I’ll get a chance to buy a copy of my own cd. When mp3.com got bought I missed the time window to be able to retrieve or even purchase my own songs that I had up there.
Oh, and I’m also releasing the individual tracks for seperate downloads if you’re so inclined, it would be cheaper to get the whole cd, but if you just want to hear one or two, you have that choice too. No DRM of any sort on the files - the CD is a plain old audio cd and the download tracks are 256-bit mp3.
My “storefront” page over at lulu… is here.

[...] from the command line in linux… or generating them from Wavs…. So, I’ve got this CD that I’ve made and is up for sale at lulu.com traditional hymns done as “chimes”. I’ve spent quite a bit of time recording to hard drive, editing and getting the wav files as good as possible and I’ve uploaded them, but I also want to make the individual songs available as mp3 downloads too. AND I want to give a preview, either a low quality mp3 of the whole, or a high quality 30 second clip…. Hmmm… how to do it. [...]
