Free Sheet music online

Yes, I’ve talked about copyright some recently and it dovetails very nicely with this post. Most everything in the classical repertoire written before 1900 is currently in the public domain and there are lot’s of choices these days on editions for many of them, but many aren’t aware that many of these pieces are available online. I was reminded of this while I was searching for the quintessential halloween organ piece…. Tocatta and fugue in d minor which until very recently has been attributed to J.S. Bach (BWV 565) I found a free pdf download here of the tocatta and fugue in d minor btw…. On looking at the pdf, I noticed that it was from the mutopia project website. The mutopia project aims to be the project gutenberg of music.

The music available there is free to download and redistribute. (In fact, I’m thinking of putting a few on my lulu.com page so I can get a NICE printed copy for a few hard to find items. Maybe even with the plastic spiral binding to help with page turning.(?)) All is perfectly acceptible with the license that I read although you do need to be aware that EVEN though the source material is public domain, you need to check the copyright on the copy you find to make sure IT allows further copying/performance/etc.

In fact, after reviewing the copyright information on the mutopia project I might even consider mirroring the collection.

Anyway, I’ve added a few links a bit further down the left hand side of the main page for your free pdf sheet music download searches.
