Nice condenser microphone…. AKG Perception 200

27 June, 2008 (10:03) | Audio Recording, Site Info

Audio gear time…. I’ve run across this condenser microphone at Musician’s Friend. AKG Perception 200 (~$160) very highly recommended. Judging by the reviews it’s a very good buy. (Microphones only go UP from the $160 price level. I remember getting some Shure beta green series which was a lower quality [...]

7 March, 2008 (03:58) | Site Info

Over the last little while and over the coming weeks, I expect we’ll have several changes going on the site. For starters, the webhosting account upgrade should be done well before you read this post, as should a basic upgrade of our backend software. I expect to be rolling out a few new [...]

The Long Term Power of Regular Practice

8 February, 2008 (08:59) | Music Lessons, Piano Lessons, Practice, Site Info

It’s been quoted many times that a journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step. When you think of many of the things we do in life it can be overwhelming to consider the enormity of what is needed to be done. To shrink the quote above a bit, let’s say [...]

Online public domain and other music searches

16 September, 2007 (14:48) | Site Info

I’ve found several sites have stayed open in tabs for their usefulness… The cyberhymnal is one (lyrics and information - sometimes midi and score for songs.) Also, there’s The music library at timelesstruths.org they give copyright status, lyrics/midi and score as well as lyrics. Some books and lyrics are available online [...]

Notation editing software

16 September, 2007 (14:41) | Notation, Site Info

For a while I’ve used Allegro from Finale, but just found reference to this shareware editor from http://www.myriad-online.com/ called Melody Assistant. If you’re looking for music notation software it might be worth a look (it also apparently runs well via wine on linux.)

Summer Lessons

4 June, 2007 (14:20) | Music Lessons, Site Info

Summer is really a good time to take up lessons (or continue lessons). I know, we all have vacation plans here and there, but the summer has great potential to get in a good amount of practice time and at least maintain, if not improve on what you’ve worked hard through the year to [...]

Free Sheet music online

3 November, 2006 (12:33) | Music News, Site Info

Yes, I’ve talked about copyright some recently and it dovetails very nicely with this post. Most everything in the classical repertoire written before 1900 is currently in the public domain and there are lot’s of choices these days on editions for many of them, but many aren’t aware that many of these pieces are [...]

Public Domain music and Old hymnals

30 October, 2006 (16:01) | Site Info

By now, if you’ve visited this site before you know that much of the song that I’m familiar with comes in the form of Church hymns. Which, can be completely seperate in style from the classical piano traditions of my College music lessons… But anyway, the topic of copyright is something that I [...]

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve added a subdomain to this site at music.ashevillemusiclessons.com which currently hosts information on the Chimes Volume 1 CD as well as the individual downloadable tracks. I hope that before long I’ll have more CDs to mention there.
